Back to 1998 for this one, released on Roni Size’s now defunct Full Cycle label as the title track on the EP of the same name, Closing In is a prime example of the Bristol sound at the peak of its powers. A great track to mix with, the track rolls along on organic, metallic breaks which evolve throughout, and a bassline that can only be described as stomping. In fact, this is probably one of my favourite ever bass riffs, and it never fails to put a smile on people’s faces. The evolution doesn’t stop there either, as just when you’ve settled into the groove, in comes a sublime female vocal, reverbed and uplifting, which adds a completely different dynamic to the atmosphere. This is stripped down, dancefloor funk at its best.
