Jungle Tune Of The Week: Technical Itch – Contents Of Force

A seminal work from one of the leaders of the modern darkside scene, this was a B side release on Moving Shadow which for me is still up there with his best work. A masterpiece of jazzy, steppy jungle, this track has plenty of dancefloor energy, whilst still retaining enough ‘intelligence’ to take the listener on a journey as it evolves throughout its course. Brass instrument samples, vocal snippets, and beats that get more and more intricate as the tune progresses combine to increase the energy, but for me, the best moment of the track is when it cuts back to bare beats and a new sub note is introduced. An all time favourite.

Jungle Tune Of The Week: Hyper On Experience – Disturbance (Tango Remix)

Less well known than the anthemic Foul Play remix of Hyper On Experience’s ‘Lord Of The Null Lines,’which was also released on the seminal Moving Shadow label, the Tango remix of Disturbance for me is vastly underappreciated. The very definition of dark Jungle, this track has it all: evil, soft spoken male vocals, ethereal choral armospherics,  a pounding but understated bassline, and breaks that manage to be rolling and intricate at the same time, switching and increasing in layers all the way through. A favourite of DJ’s such as Ratty in and around 1994, this track is worthy of being termed a classic.

DnB Tune Of The Week: Rawthang – Darkness

Although not the most prolific of producers, Norway’s production duo Rawthang should definitely be seen as artists who put quality above quantity. Released in 2004 on Moving Shadow as part of a split EP alongside Kaiser, Darkness for me represents the absolute zenith of the heavier end of the Drum and Bass spectrum of the time. The intro presents an enveloping soundscape; sweeping pads, swirling male vocal samples, and fluttering waterfalls of amen breaks give way to evil rave stabs and sub bass. The drop hits like a sledgehammer, brilliant amen programming of such intricacy that I genuinely rate it as some of the best I’ve ever heard. It’s a crime that this track isn’t more well known.
